The Pittsburgh tiled extract is derived from Geofabrik's public Pennsylvania OSM extract, containing data through 2026-10-18T20:25:06Z: https://download.geofabrik.de/north-america/us/pennsylvania-261018.osm.pbf Published source MD5: 3e952c8b859382b4c55d7c4a50328ed7 Source metadata: https://download.geofabrik.de/north-america/us/pennsylvania.html

The distributable derived database is the readable JSON in `packs/pittsburgh/`. Its manifest records coverage, source, per-tile sizes and SHA-256 checksums. The small initial pack is `packs/pittsburgh.json`; neighboring tiles are fetched individually as the player explores. No regional PBF, credentials, test fixtures, Python environment or development tools belong in the runtime package.

Roads are clipped to tile bounds. Derived fragment IDs contain the original OSM way ID and tile coordinates; `osm_id` preserves the original identifier. These are real coordinates, never procedurally shifted. Buildings are limited to the 650 largest in each tile, matching the existing rendering budget. Water/green and parking layers include tagged ways. The geography enrichment step additionally assembles five real Pittsburgh water multipolygon relations, preserving inner island rings before triangulating and clipping to tile bounds. The map is not a survey or navigation aid.

Other preset packs retain their existing OSM-derived data and attribution. Outside the baked Pittsburgh square the game still attempts its live map path; network failures remain visible and fallback scenery is labeled as synthetic.

Rebuild with Python and osmium==4.3.2: `python bake_pittsburgh_tiles.py /path/to/pennsylvania-261018.osm.pbf` The builder verifies the source checksum and makes no network calls.

Pittsburgh elevation and river enrichment (2026-10-20)

Terrain Tiles was accessed on 2026-10-20 from https://registry.opendata.aws/terrain-tiles/ . Terrain data courtesy of USGS 3DEP (formerly NED), distributed by Mapzen / the Linux Foundation on AWS. Source attribution: https://github.com/tilezen/joerd/blob/master/docs/attribution.md Four Terrarium PNG tiles at zoom 12 (1137–1138, 1543–1544) were fetched without an account. Their URLs and SHA256 hashes are recorded in the pack manifest. The terrain uses a 65×65 grid per map tile (~24 m spacing), identical shared edges, and no invented mountain peaks. Heights are relative to the sampled 216.63 m river datum. River stage, bridge deck heights, road grading and building foundations are gameplay approximations, not survey-grade engineering. Smaller lakes use DEM-derived surface levels. Rendered water is intentionally blue for readability; this is not a measurement of river colour.

Offline rebuild (from repository root, existing osmium environment): 1. `../osm-venv/bin/python tools/geography/extract_relations.py` 2. `../osm-venv/bin/python tools/geography/extract_water_geometry.py` 3. `node tools/geography/triangulate_water.cjs` 4. `../osm-venv/bin/python bake_geography.py`

The extraction scripts read the verified PBF already recorded above; the triangulator uses the existing MIT-licensed Three.js embedded in index.html. The decoder uses Python standard-library PNG/zlib handling; no new runtime library, service, secret or account is required. `tools/geography/acquire_dem.py` is a separate bounded download step for regenerating the four cached sources. Source PBF/PNGs and development scripts are excluded from the runtime ZIP.

Licensing clarification: OSM-derived geometry is distributed under ODbL 1.0 (see source attribution above). USGS 3DEP terrain is public-domain data; Mapzen/Tilezen requests source credit. The terrain attribution documentation explicitly identifies this status: https://github.com/tilezen/joerd/blob/master/docs/attribution.md#3dep . Runtime attribution is retained. No satellite imagery or third-party building textures were added.

Bounded quality pass — 2026-10-20

San Francisco's existing central pack now contains a 65×65 (~24 m) USGS 3DEP/Mapzen Terrarium elevation grid. One public tile was acquired; source URL and SHA256 are in the pack terrain.sources and evidence/terrain/san-francisco/sources.json. Coverage is only [37.7681,-122.428002984,37.7817,-122.410797016], roughly 1.5×1.5 km; samples range 4.94–54.99 m. It does not include the Golden Gate Bridge or add bay water outside this central extent. Other non-Pittsburgh packs are not expanded or assigned invented elevations. USGS public-domain data and Mapzen attribution apply as above. Rebuild: tools/geography/enrich_city_elevation.py san-francisco.

Existing verified Pennsylvania OSM data supplied 88 tunnel-tagged road fragments and six bridge:structure-tagged fragments to the Pittsburgh bundle. These identify Hot Metal Street / 28th Street Bridge trusses and Andy Warhol / Rachel Carson suspension structures. Tags are retained without inventing missing values. Generic procedural deck beams and piers apply to explicit bridges in all cities; type-aware details are approximate, not landmark replicas or surveyed engineering. Supports avoid mapped lower-road center corridors; foundations, spacing and cable profiles remain gameplay approximations. Geometry is capped at 480 parts per tile and merged. No paid assets. Rebuild metadata: tools/geography/enrich_bridge_tags.py.

Pittsburgh alignment correction — 2026-10-21

Only Pittsburgh roads now share centerline DEM heights across each road cross-section. The eight clipped Liberty Bridge fragments share a continuous linear grade between existing OSM endpoints [40.429169,-79.999259] and [40.436060,-79.994503], using sampled endpoint DEM heights 40.185m and 29.738m above the existing local datum. This replaces riverbed-following deck distortions and layer-tag height steps. It is an explicit gameplay grading approximation, **not surveyed deck elevation or an exact landmark replica**. Existing OSM geometry and USGS terrain samples are retained. Rebuild: tools/geography/liberty_bridge_profile.py (offline; uses only saved data). OSM ODbL and Mapzen/USGS credits above remain applicable. No new source was fetched. Other bridge grades remain approximations.

Pittsburgh surface-junction grading (2026-10-21): roads meeting at the same mapped node share a local level intersection and an 18m eased transition back to sampled DEM. This is a gameplay grading approximation; it does not change underlying DEM samples or OSM coordinates. Bridge/elevated/tunnel roads and unconnected geometric crossings are excluded. Sidewalk/kerb/lane strips stop inside the graded junction region. OSM and USGS attribution above is unchanged.

San Francisco bounded verification (2026-10-21)

The existing 1.5×1.5 km central bundle was checked against one OpenStreetMap API extract of the same bounding box: https://api.openstreetmap.org/api/0.6/map?bbox=-122.428003,37.768100,-122.410797,37.781700 . Three existing ways now retain their source tunnel/building_passage tags (148546177, 1093790281, 1343304094); geometry remains unchanged. Source SHA256 and versions are recorded in evidence/sf-source-audit.json in the review workspace. © OpenStreetMap contributors, ODbL 1.0: https://www.openstreetmap.org/copyright .

The extract confirms no open water in this central extent. Mission Creek way 1127625117 is tagged underground culvert and is not drawn as a surface river. The 13 existing bridge-tagged road fragments are freeway/overpass features, not Golden Gate or Bay Bridge replicas. Elevation is terrain data, not surveyed road/deck engineering heights; generic deck clearance and building foundations remain approximations. No neighboring SF offline tiles or shoreline expansion was added.

New York bounded verification (2026-10-21)

Midtown/Times Square only, bbox [40.7512,-73.994477208,40.7648,-73.976522792], approximately 1.5×1.5 km. Completed relations276130 (StJames Park Lake),3952494 (basin),5257684 (fountain) were also reconstructed with their holes. Open bank pieces are replaced by triangulated, clipped source geometry and shoreline lines. Metadata/provenance in workspace evidence/london-source-audit.json.51 missing source structural/tunnel tags restored. Thames gameplay water is a fixed0.18m datum, not actual tide. Other water levels derive approximately from the DEM. Bridge heights and foundations remain generic, not surveyed landmark replicas. No neighboring London offline tiles or citywide coverage claim.

Paris bounded verification (2026-10-21)

Detail pass — 2026-10-21

All seven preset packs were rebaked with `bake_packs.py` at the project owner’s direction to raise visible map detail in the existing central extent (the bbox is unchanged, so every terrain grid, water reconstruction and audit restoration still applies):

- Building cap raised 650 -> 2000 in both the baker and the game's city builder (`MAXB`), so dense centres no longer discard most of their buildings. Every pack now carries 2,000 buildings except Los Angeles (643 in extent) and the Pittsburgh starter (602). - Footway, path and cycleway ways are no longer skipped by the baker or the builder. They render as narrow paths (2.4-2.6 m) in their own colours and are excluded from the drivable-road set, like pedestrian ways and tracks. Road counts rose accordingly: New York 554 -> 2,122, San Francisco 1,188 -> 2,961, Los Angeles 993 -> 2,672, London 1,338 -> 4,503, Paris 1,077 -> 5,395, Tokyo 1,027 -> 2,080. The Pittsburgh starter pack is byte-identical to the centre streaming tile by construction, so it was left unchanged in this pass; Pittsburgh tile-level detail belongs with the coverage follow-on (a full tile rebake from a fresh Pennsylvania extract, replaying the geography chain). - Area-layer caps raised (water 90 -> 200, green 160 -> 300, parking 90 -> 150). - Enrichment preservation: each rebake was merged back against the pack it replaced. Terrain grids, `shore` and `source` blocks were carried over untouched; the rebuilt London, Paris and Pittsburgh water layers were kept verbatim; surveyed water levels and the restored tunnel/building_passage road tags were filled back per feature id. The geography asset tests now assert preservation (every previously audited feature still present with identical geometry and tags) rather than byte equality of the whole pack. - Validation (software-rendered test browser): each city builds with zero errors; build times 5.8-10.6 s in that rig at the new counts (New York 2,121 roads / 2,022 polys, London 4,498 / 2,054, Paris 5,395 / 2,043, Tokyo 2,080 / 2,026, San Francisco 2,961 / 2,016, Los Angeles 2,672 / 635). - Coverage beyond the central extent (Pittsburgh-style baked tiles for the other cities) remains a separate follow-on; this pass is detail density, not area.

Local stream surface repair (Stage 7F)

Pittsburgh water feature 864510770 uses per-vertex `h` from the shipped terrain grid instead of a hillside centroid's flat 74.84 m value. Heights are approximate terrain-derived values, not surveyed water elevations. The footprint and terrain are unchanged. Rendering and contact use the same triangulation. Reproduce with `python3 tests/manual/repair_stream_surface.py` and review the manifest after any geography rebuild. See `handoff/STAGE7F_CHECKPOINT.md` for measured limits and remaining road exceptions.
